Summer semester 2025

CourseContent
Climate and energy management
(Master)
An overview of interactions between energy stocks and flows, human development and environmental challenges. Planetary and societal energetics, climate change impacts, climate change mitigation and adaptation, international climate policy, socio-metabolic transitions, and global decarbonization pathways.
Complex systems modelling (Master)Summary of the science and art of modelling complex systems, from fundamental theory to real-world application. We survey a range of methods such as dynamical systems, agent-based models, machine learning, evolutionary computing and adaptive networks. Students develop their own models of real-world systems, applying the methods of their choosing.
Applied system sciences 2 (Bachelor)System dynamics modelling in the context of sustainability, using the Vensim software package. Students develop models of systems that are particularly interesting to them, whether natural, technical, economic, social or some combination of these.

Winter semester 2024-25

CourseContent
Social-ecological systems analysis
(Master)
Overview of theories, concepts, methods, and data analysis approaches relevant for analysing social-ecological systems.
Human behaviour and human-nature interactions
(Master)
A survey of the psychological and psychosocial factors that affect social-ecological system dynamics. Includes perspectives from evolutionary biology, psychology, cognitive science, behavioural economics, social sciences and complex-systems science.
Mathematics for social-ecological systems science
(Master)
Bridging course for students who have limited experience with mathematics and modelling. The aim is to provide the conceptual and mathematical tools needed for more advanced courses on complex systems modelling. Focusses on mathematical modelling in ecology and evolution.
